Silence is Golden?

چکیده
A silent store is a write to memory that does not alter the value already present at the target address. Our experiments show that approximately 29% of dynamic store instructions are silent, with some applications showing upwards of 60% (gcc). At first glance, this may seem unintuitively large and suggestive of poor code writing and/or code compilation. However, we have found existence of silent stores to be more related to algorithm behavior and ISA translation than artifacts of code generation. Since silent stores can exist in significant numbers, the phenomenon is worth further investigation. Molina et al. [2] and Lepak and Lipasti [1] both demonstrated that silent stores can be detected by the processor and then exploited to eliminate some unnecessary cache write-back traffic. However, these schemes required a preliminary load-and-compare operation to detect a silent store. This type of detection is somewhat wasteful, but more importantly, it limits the scope of practical silent store optimizations. We propose speculative identification of silent stores to create more opportunities to exploit them. This paper introduces our silent store predictors and describes two ways they can improve performance: through enhancement of memory disambiguation and increased exploitation of dead instructions.

Speech is Silver, Silence is Golden: The Cultural Importance of Silence in Japan
In Japan, there exists a strange dichotomy. On the one hand, it is a noisy place: the constant announcements in the train stations and shopping centres, the loud cries of shopkeepers greeting customers to their stores, the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. On the other hand, the Japanese value silence. It might seem odd that silence is valued in a place where such a cacophony exists, but s...
متن کاملSilence Is Golden? - The Effects of Selence Deletion on the CPU Load of an Audio Conference
This paper presents a study of CPU performance of audio conferences on packetswitched networks using silence deletion. We present a model for measuring audioconference load, perform micro-experiments measure the CPU load of the audioconference components, perform macro-experiments to test predications based on the micro-experiments, and predict the performance of audioconferences under future t...

Jamming techniques require just moderate resources to be deployed, while their effectiveness in disrupting communications is unprecedented. In this paper we introduce several contributions to jamming mitigation. In particular, we introduce a novel adversary model that has both (unlimited) jamming reactive capabilities as well as powerful (but limited) proactive jamming capabilities. Under this ...
متن کاملSelective memory retrieval in social groups: When silence is golden and when it is not.
Previous research has shown that the selective remembering of a speaker and the resulting silences can cause forgetting of related, but unmentioned information by a listener (Cuc, Koppel, & Hirst, 2007). Guided by more recent work that demonstrated both detrimental and beneficial effects of selective memory retrieval in individuals, the present research explored the effects of selective remembe...
